In 2014, I assisted noodle + scribble with the production of an undergraduate admissions brochure for the University of Kansas. My principal duties included research and copywriting. An excerpt of the brochure is viewable below.
Do Everything
KU is a campus community built on friendship, diversity, and well-earned good times. Interested in politics, film or even sustainable farming? Join any of our 600 student organizations. Feeling competitive? Perfect your racquetball swing at our sports complex. Got a birthday coming up? Celebrate with cake and swim in the Fountain with a hundred of your closest friends. When it comes to living well at KU, we’ve got you covered.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ASSOCIATION (ISA)
One of the best ways to grow your social circle is to attend an ISA event. This campus organization brings international and domestic students together for group meals, sports matches, live performances, and our yearly Festival of Nations talent and fashion show.
THE STUDENT INVOLVEMENT AND LEADERSHIP CENTER (SILC)
Today’s most pressing global issues will require strong leaders with vision and drive. The SILC is the perfect place to exercise your leadership skills with workshops and challenges designed to give you the tools to improve your own living space, workplace, or community.
STUDENT UNION ACTIVITIES
The KU Memorial Unions are your go-to stop for some much-deserved leisure. From standup comedians to movie screenings and even Texas Hold’Em tournaments, you’re sure to find the perfect way to unwind.
KU GREEKS
Greek life is a popular social option of the US collegiate experience and at KU you’ll have more than 45 fraternities and sororities to consider joining. About 1 in 5 students join a fraternity or sorority.
EMILY TAYLOR CENTER FOR WOMEN AND GENDER EQUITY.
At KU, we believe that a strong campus begins with student solidarity. The Emily Taylor Center for Women and Gender Equity regularly hosts diversity awareness events, stage productions, and ally training workshops for all students and faculty.
FAITH AT KU
When it comes to religion at KU, you can be a student of faith, a curious agnostic, or even an atheist! Our campus offers upwards of 40 different religious organizations for students seeking a welcoming and proud interfaith community, as well as a variety of religious prayer, service, reflection observation, discussion and study opportunities.
STUDENT GOVERNMENT
Want to make a difference on campus? Running for a slot in the KU Student Senate will give you valuable campaign management experience and allow you to have a powerful voice in the allocation of student fees.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENT SERVICES (ISS)
ISS offers practical advisement to all international students. We can clarify the regulations attached to your immigration status, help you find the right health insurance, and assist you with filing any US taxes as a nonresident.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Volunteering is a great way to meet new friends and gain real skills. Local schools, civic clubs, and even KU classes regularly seek the input of international speakers, performers, and translators. Our ISS team can help you find the perfect volunteer opportunity to compliment your skills and interests.
SPECIAL EVENTS
During the spring, ISS hosts International Awareness Week, which features live performances, games, and exhibits. And each November, we honor international students with our World at KU Annual Reception, a “roll call of nations” that concludes with a roll call of delicious dessert treats.
Jayhawk Pride
Consider the Jayhawk. A beast that strikes awe into the hearts of all who challenge it on the court, the field, the pool, or the track. A bird able to produce the most deafening sound that will thrill you to your core and make your toes tingle.
The Jayhawk brings the campus together and fills everyone with intense pride, camaraderie and spirit. The Jayhawk is electric, and it’s the mascot of our university’s athletic teams.
Attending a college football game on a sunny October day, or a basketball game late in the season and being part of the crowd is one of those quintessential American experiences you will never forget. When you’re cheering on your team, you’re taking part in an ancient human ritual that taps into the core of what it means to work hard, persist and overcome. Sport shows us how to win and lose with grace, how to work together, and how to be a hero when you must. You will find yourself cheering louder than you ever have before, hugging the stranger next to you when victory is imminent and riding a roller coaster of emotion as the lead in the game goes back and forth. Feel it. Enjoy it. And learn what it means to find your courage.
KU competes at the highest level of intercollegiate athletics sanctioned by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in the United States. This level is classified as NCAA Division I and is populated by the country’s major collegiate athletic powers.
Get In The Game
Try out for a team or play a pick-up soccer game with your dormmates. You don’t have to be a professional athlete to enjoy KU’s spectacular sports facilities. As a student, you’ll enjoy complimentary access to the well-equipped campus fitness resources.
PLAY HARD
KU’s Club program has something for everyone. Whether you’re looking to compete in regional games or simply unwind after your last class, our studentrun clubs will welcome you with open (and well-toned!) arms.
PLAY HARDER
If you’re looking for more competitive opportunities, our Intramural Sports program offers 25 athletic leagues for students with high school varsity-level playing experience or greater. Choose from team sports, singles/doubles sports, or team tournaments. Either way, you’re guaranteed a friendly and ferocious match.
PLAY FOR FUN AND FITNESS
KU Recreation Services provides University of Kansas students, faculty, and staff with a variety of resources for physical fitness, team and individual sports, classes, and personal training. Our indoor and outdoor facilities accommodate many students— from beginners looking to improve their health with low-impact exercise, to seasoned athletes aspiring to push their abilities to the next level.
PLAY OUTDOORS
KU’s Outdoor Pursuits program offers equipment rental for hiking, biking, camping, and canoeing. Staff can also provide information on area hiking trails and campsites. On campus we offer “Chalk Rock,” a 42-feet tall climbing wall and an outdoor obstacle challenge course.
SPORTS, FITNESS AND RECREATION RESOURCES
Ambler Student Recreation Fitness Center. Our $117 million modern health club opened its doors in 2003 and received an expansion in 2007. Today, the center features 6,000 square feet (4876.8 meters) of cardiovascular and resistance-training equipment, four racquetball/squash courts, six basketball and volleyball courts, aerobics and martial arts studios, a suspended walking/jogging track, a 42-foot (12.8-meter) rock climbing wall, a bike repair shop and even an indoor golf simulator!
Adams Campus Outdoor Education Center. Do you enjoy canoeing down wild rivers? Summiting snowy mountains? If so, you’ll feel right at home at KU’s Adams Campus Outdoor Education Center. Established to promote outdoor leadership, teamwork, and problem-solving skills, the center offers adventurous students a challenging obstacle course designed to give your comfort zone a healthy rattling. The course elements include crawling, climbing, and even freefalling through the natural forest that borders Southeast Lawrence. Participation is open to KU students as well as the general public.
The Shenk Sports Complex. Some days, there’s nothing better than breaking a sweat beneath the sun. Whether it’s rugby scrum, a yoga class, or a relay race, there’s always something happening on the outdoor fields of our Shenk Sports Complex.
